    In information retrieval it is difficult to extract the accurate information to satisfy a user’s information need. Based on the goals, we categorise the searches into two groups: information search and navigational search, and proposed a method using ontology to extract the the specific or general context for the given query and perform the search using it. An IR system using the method can be more efficient as it performs the search associating to the user's particular goal

    Inhibitory activity of CXCR4 attenuates intervertebral disc degeneration by regulating TXNIP/NLRP3 expression

    Purpose: To explore the inhibitory effect and mechanism of action of CXCR4 on intervertebral disc degeneration.Methods: The expression of CXCR4 was assessed in different degrees of degenerate disc tissues. Nucleus pulposus (NP) cells-induced degeneration were obtained using interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) stimulation. CXCR4 inhibitor, AMD 3100, was employed to resist the function of CXCR4, in order to determine whether CXCR4 inhibition acted by targeting TXNIP/NLRP3 axis.Results: Expression of CXCR4 increased in severely degenerated disc tissues. IL-1β activated and promoted the progression of intervertebral disc degeneration, but AMD3100 treatment reversed the effects of IL-1β. Moreover, TXNIP and NLRP3 were significantly suppressed by AMD3100 stimuli.Conclusion: The results demonstrate that inhibition of CXCR4 prevents NP cells from degradation by regulating TXNIP/NLRP3 signaling pathway, thus indicating that this approach could be effective in the management of intervertebral disc degeneration

    Ontology-based specific and exhaustive user profiles for constraint information fusion for multi-agents

    Intelligent agents are an advanced technology utilized in Web Intelligence. When searching information from a distributed Web environment, information is retrieved by multi-agents on the client site and fused on the broker site. The current information fusion techniques rely on cooperation of agents to provide statistics. Such techniques are computationally expensive and unrealistic in the real world. In this paper, we introduce a model that uses a world ontology constructed from the Dewey Decimal Classification to acquire user profiles. By search using specific and exhaustive user profiles, information fusion techniques no longer rely on the statistics provided by agents. The model has been successfully evaluated using the large INEX data set simulating the distributed Web environment

    Knowledge discovery for user information needs in user local information repositories is a challenging task. Traditional data mining techniques cannot provide a satisfactory solution for this challenge, because there exists a lot of uncertainties in the local information repositories. In this chapter, we introduce ontology mining, a new methodology, for solving this challenging issue, which aims to discover interesting and useful knowledge in databases in order to meet the specified constraints on an ontology. In this way, users can efficiently specify their information needs on the ontology rather than dig useful knowledge from the huge amount of discorded patterns or rules. The proposed ontology mining model is evaluated by applying to an information gathering system, and the results are promising

    Twitter analysis for depression on social networks based on sentiment and stress

    Detecting words that express negativity in a social media message is one step towards detecting depressive moods. To understand if a Twitter user could exhibit depression over a period of time, we applied techniques in stages to discover words that are negative in expression. Existing methods either use a single step or a data subset, whereas we applied a multi-step approach which allowed us to identify potential users and then discover the words that expressed negativity by these users. We address some Twitter specific characteristics in our research. One of which is that Twitter data can be very large, hence our desire to be able to process the data efficiently. The other is that due to its enforced character limitation, the style of writing makes interpreting and obtaining the semantic meaning of the words more challenging. Results show that the sentiment of these words can be obtained and scored efficiently as the computation on these dataset were narrowed to only these selected users. We also obtained the stress scores which correlated well with negative sentiment expressed in the content. This work shows that by first identifying users and then using methods to discover words can be a very effective technique

    In the medical domain, there exists a large volume of data from multiple sources such as electronic health records, general health examination results, and surveys. The data contain useful information reflecting people’s health and provides great opportunities for studies to improve the quality of healthcare. However, how to mine these data effectively and efficiently still remains a critical challenge. In this paper, we propose an innovative classification model for knowledge discovery from patients’ personal health repositories. By based on analytics of massive data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the study builds a classification model to classify patients’health status and reveal the specific disease potentially suffered by the patient. This paper makes significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in data mining with an innovative classification model specifically crafted for domain-based data. Moreover, this research contributes to the healthcare community by providing a deep understanding of people’s health with accessibility to the patterns in various observations

    A hybrid representation based simile component extraction

    Simile, a special type of metaphor, can help people to express their ideas more clearly. Simile component extraction is to extract tenors and vehicles from sentences. This task has a realistic significance since it is useful for building cognitive knowledge base. With the development of deep neural networks, researchers begin to apply neural models to component extraction. Simile components should be in cross-domain. According to our observations, words in cross-domain always have different concepts. Thus, concept is important when identifying whether two words are simile components or not. However, existing models do not integrate concept into their models. It is difficult for these models to identify the concept of a word. What’s more, corpus about simile component extraction is limited. There are a number of rare words or unseen words, and the representations of these words are always not proper enough. Exiting models can hardly extract simile components accurately when there are low-frequency words in sentences. To solve these problems, we propose a hybrid representation-based component extraction (HRCE) model. Each word in HRCE is represented in three different levels: word level, concept level and character level. Concept representations (representations in concept level) can help HRCE to identify the words in cross-domain more accurately. Moreover, with the help of character representations (representations in character levels), HRCE can represent the meaning of a word more properly since words are consisted of characters and these characters can partly represent the meaning of words. We conduct experiments to compare the performance between HRCE and existing models. The experiment results show that HRCE significantly outperforms current models

    A case study of predicting banking customers behaviour by using data mining

    Data Mining (DM) is a technique that examines information stored in large database or data warehouse and find the patterns or trends in the data that are not yet known or suspected. DM techniques have been applied to a variety of different domains including Customer Relationship Management CRM). In this research, a new Customer Knowledge Management (CKM) framework based on data mining is proposed. The proposed data mining framework in this study manages relationships between banking organizations and their customers. Two typical data mining techniques - Neural Network and Association Rules - are applied to predict the behavior of customers and to increase the decision-making processes for recalling valued customers in banking industries. The experiments on the real world dataset are conducted and the different metrics are used to evaluate the performances of the two data mining models. The results indicate that the Neural Network model achieves better accuracy but takes longer time to train the model

    Drug prescription support in dental clinics through drug corpus mining

    The rapid increase in the volume and variety of data poses a challenge to safe drug prescription for the dentist. The increasing number of patients that take multiple drugs further exerts pressure on the dentist to make the right decision at point-of-care. Hence, a robust decision support system will enable dentists to make decisions on drug prescription quickly and accurately. Based on the assumption that similar drug pairs have a higher similarity ratio, this paper suggests an innovative approach to obtain the similarity ratio between the drug that the dentist is going to prescribe and the drug that the patient is currently taking. We conducted experiments to obtain the similarity ratios of both positive and negative drug pairs, by using feature vectors generated from term similarities and word embeddings of biomedical text corpus. This model can be easily adapted and implemented for use in a dental clinic to assist the dentist in deciding if a drug is suitable for prescription, taking into consideration the medical profile of the patients. Experimental evaluation of our model’s association of the similarity ratio between two drugs yielded a superior F score of 89%. Hence, such an approach, when integrated within the clinical work flow, will reduce prescription errors and thereby increase the health outcomes of patients
